Hepatitis A

Liver Disease Linked to Ingestion of Fecal Matter

Hepatitis A is a disease that causes inflammation and swelling of the liver due to exposure to the hepatitis A virus. The disease is most often spread by the ingestion of food or drinks contaminated with fecal matter, even in tiny microscopic amounts, or by close contact between a contaminated person and another person. The symptoms of hepatitis A can last for a few weeks to several months, but unlike other forms of hepatitis, including hepatitis B and hepatitis C, hepatitis A is not a chronic disease and does not result in permanent damage to victims.

Hepatitis A is commonly spread by unsanitary conditions in restaurants and other food-service industries, where workers may fail to properly wash their hands before preparing or serving customers food. The disease may also be spread by eating shellfish harvested from ocean waters contaminated by sewage.

What Are the Symptoms of Hepatitis A Disease?

The symptoms of hepatitis A most often develop between two and six weeks after infection. In most cases, the symptoms are not severe and go away on their own, over time, without medical treatment. The most common symptoms of hepatitis A contamination include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea, especially in children
  • Low-grade fever
  • Loss of appetite
  • Rash
  • Tiredness, fatigue
  • Jaundice, a yellow discoloration of the skin and the whites of the eyes
  • Urine is dark brown in color
  • Pain in the area of the liver, on the right side of the abdomen, below the rib cage

Am I At Risk of Developing Hepatitis A?

While any person who has direct fecal-to-mouth contact is at risk of developing hepatitis A, certain individuals are at increased risk of exposure to the virus that causes the disease. For example, living or engaging in sexual activity with an infected person increases the chances of contamination. Other factors which can increase a person’s chance of contracting hepatitis A include:

  • Travelling internationally to developing countries
  • Serving in the military stationed in developing countries
  • Working in daycare centers, prisons, mental hospitals, or similar institutions
